Greetings! My name is Lisa Schroeder (rhymes with tater). It is a great pleasure for me to become a part of the Solon United Methodist Church congregation as Associate Pastor, Minister of Discipleship and Music Ministries. I’ve been busy getting to know the Solon United Methodist Church from the website, newsletters and directory. This writing will give you a start at getting to know me and my husband, Scott, until we can get acquainted face-to-face.
I am a Provisional Elder in the Iowa Annual Conference, working toward ordination, serving as a United Methodist pastor since 2006 (when I completed licensing school). My first appointment was to the Arlington and Volga churches while attending seminary. I completed my Master of Divinity degree and graduated from the University of Dubuque in 2010, but stayed two more years to complete my Clinical Pastoral Education and a parsonage project. In 2012, I was appointed to Living Water UMC in Marion. As you might guess, these two appointments were very different. My first appointment was located in rural northeast Iowa in very small towns (Volga around 200 people, Arlington around 500 people). The second appointment was a new-plant church located in a strip mall in Marion, in their 15th year of ministry, with Marion being a part of the metro area of Cedar Rapids/Hiawatha/Marion. Worship services at my first two churches were mostly traditional with an input of bluegrass, contemporary songs and videos, and the addition of PowerPoint slides on a screen. The Living Water worship was a contemporary service with a praise band leading the music and not a hymnal in the house.
Before pastoral ministry, my background was in music ministry. I began as a young adult leading children’s choir, Vacation Bible School and offering special music in worship, weddings and funerals; later leading youth choirs, adult choirs, bell choirs and praise bands. I also served as a Sunday school teacher, superintendent and member of Christian education and worship committees, participant and president of the UMW. My history also includes five years in a band, playing keyboards and bass guitar at wedding dances, Elks Club, town festivals, the American Legion and the local golf courses.
We moved from northeast Iowa to the Cedar Rapids area in 1993 so my husband could accept a position at the University of Iowa Hospital as a registered nurse in the bone marrow transplant unit. Scott still works on the same floor, but it has also added leukemia patients to their unit. For twenty-five years before that, he worked with his parents running an Amoco gas station. He says he went from working on cars to working on humans!
After completing my Master of Arts degree at Upper Iowa University, I started teaching at Kirkwood Community College as a business instructor. In addition, I served as Music Director at Shueyville UMC; along with participating in prison ministry at the Linn County Jail and mission trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
Most recently, I have just completed the first year of the Two-Year Academy for Spiritual Formation and the first year of my Doctor of Ministry program. My position at SUMC will allow me to utilize the practices I am learning through the Academy and apply the knowledge I am gaining in my doctoral program.
Scott and I have one daughter who lives with her husband and their two children in very northern Wisconsin, near Hayward. Our two grandchildren are: Alexis (Lexi) who is fourteen and Jacob who is twelve. For relaxation and de-stressing, you will find us riding the bike trails and fishing for walleyes – or any other fish that will bite! I have plenty of pictures and fish stories to share! Scott and I are very excited about meeting everyone and being involved in all the wonderful ministries and community activities in Solon. We are looking forward to being with you soon!
